Unlearn : a de.MO workshop

A four day workshop with award winning designer Giorgio Baravalle / de.MO and guests, Andre Andreev and Dan Covert / dress code.
Unlearn : Think
The world today is in constant flux. Conventions, regarded as factual and absolute, are not concrete and certain.
This workshop is targeted to students and professionals interested in the exploration of communication through graphic design. The understanding of rules and how they shape our lives / design will be thoroughly explored by challenging the relationship between form and content. Unlearn will push the boundaries of each individual’s knowledge to enhance creativity. Arousing discussions and critiques will enable participants to rethink conventional approaches. All projects will focus on the design process, encouraging the exploration and transformation of materials and ideas.
Participants will record their weeklong experience and create a final piece (book, video, installation, etc). The work will be featured in the workshop “book”, assembled by the participants.
-
All participants should have basic knowledge of Adobe Indesign and/or Illustrator and Photoshop.
Computer lab will be available on site for use or participants may bring their own laptop.
-
Session Date:
Monday, July 26th through Friday, July 30th, all day.
-
Location:
The workshop will be held at the Millbrook School located in New York’s historic Hudson Valley www.millbrook.org.

I. WANT. MY. MTV.

…the MTV that was so young it only had a stack of music videos to play, then let a staff of renegades fill in the gaps with animation, art breaks, experimental shorts and ID’s. This combination became the visual and cultural barometer for a generation.

The landscape was new and the only glowing screen in our lives was a television. MTV looked and acted like nothing we’d ever seen before. Because at MTV, people didn’t go to work, they went to play.

We invite you to join us for a night of frolic and folly, looking back at some of those who passed through that playground and where they are now. What it was like to make art for a network that embraced creative exploration before and after our computers took over.

Hosted by the classy/classic MTV talents Toby Huss and Jim Turner (Randee of the Redwoods) and featuring the MTV work of: Bill Plympton, Todd Mueller (Psyop), Henry Selick, Mark Pellington, Abby Terkuhle, Todd St.John (Hunter Gatherer), Denis Leary, Jarl Olsen, Lena Beug, Dan Covert & Andre Andreev (Dresscode), Frank Olinsky (Creator of the MTV Logo), Brothers Quay, Marcy Brafman, Lisa Rubisch, Fred Seibert and so many more super talented people it’s not even funny.

Now dust off those Doc Martins, put your ironic t-shirts on, and come out for a nostalgic night of what was new fueled with work and stories from those who were there, then.
Thanks to an outpouring of incredible support from these generous sponsors: Click 3x, The Lab, Offspring and Ultrabland, we are offering the MY MTV event at vintage 1980s pricing. Tickets are a mere 5 BUCKS. We suggest you register in the next 5 MINUTES.

Presented by Philadelphia University School of Design and Media and AIGA Philadelphia. Dan is from Ohio. Andre is from Bulgaria. They are dress code. At the combined age of 53 their work has been recognized by shiny awards, appeared in lots of magazines, coffee table books, and 3 museums. They met while studying graphic design at California College of the Arts. Then moved to New York and got jobs with MTV working in motion and print before leaving their dream jobs to start a studio of their own.

They also co-teach Design, Type, and New Media classes at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. A book they wrote about transitioning from school to work in the field of graphic design, entitled Never Sleep, is in stores now.

Andre eats meat and drinks that purple stuff, Dan dislikes puppies and is somewhat of an amateur magician. See for yourself 24 hours a day at dresscodeny.com and neversleepbook.com.

WHEN: Thursday, March 4, 2010
TIME: 7:00 lecture
WHERE: Philadelphia University, Tuttleman Auditorium
COST: This event is FREE and open to the public
